Your Team Needs to REACH

I’ve spoken quite a bit recently on the concept of “leader-as-coach”, but I’d like to take a dive into an acronym I suggest all teams use, and that is REACH.

At first glance, one might assume that it refers to how a leader might engage with an employee in developing them or how to work towards patient/customer acquisition. In fact, the concept is overarching in that it begins with management, is transferred and conveyed upon employees to espouse, and gives its final nod to how your business brings service to the population you treat.

Reach: It’s not just a physical activity

REACH stems from the need for any company to maintain integrity in all they do. Lacking integrity creates chaos, a disheartening and toxic environment and eventually failure.

Respect

A basic tenet of any life group must begin with respect. We simply can not function harmoniously without it. Respect, at its core, is that you value each other just because. That’s it. Just because they are your co-worker. Just because they are your employee. Just because they are a human being on this planet. Just because.

Engagement

Find meaningful ways to interact with one another beyond the tasks, systems and processes needed to get through a work day. Make and take the time to know and understand one another on a personal level. This isn’t an invitation to move into the friend zone. It’s knowing who you’re spending much of your life with and becoming in tune with them on a deeper level. Doing so allows you to better support them when they are struggling or cheer them on when they have success, both personally and professionally.

Accountability

Accountability requires that not only do all parties maintain ownership for what they are responsible for, but are also accountable for their actions.

Commitment

If any team is going to succeed, each member must openly acknowledge their commitment to support and grow one another. Assume the best unless proven otherwise.

Honesty

Honesty begins within. From there, it moves outward, maintaining transparency by expressing fears, wants and needs, finally circling back to accountability.

Think about ways you can start rolling out the REACH model by first defining what those words mean to you and affect your business. Consider specific instances where each are applicable, and at your next team meeting communicate this to everyone. An opportunity awaits so as you further enrich company culture, REACH can be interwoven into everyday functions.
