Goals…what we do to achieve them

Like many of you, what I want to do and what I need to do are often at opposite ends of the spectrum.  I enjoy writing immensely and it would have been easy to simply jump into crafting articles and blog posts before fully setting up my new website.  At the the beginning of its creation, however, I promised myself that I would not type a single word in a blog before I had it laid out and published.  Goals.

Inherently, I am NOT a task-oriented person.  Not one bit, actually.  But when things need to get done and we don’t have a system in place to cross off each task, chaos ensues.  Years ago, when my children were very small, I ran across a woman who called herself

“The FlyLady”.

Essentially, she provided tips and tricks to help busy people maximize their time with a series of exercises, the most important of which was to sit down every morning to write out your “to do” list and assign a time allotment to complete it in:   Brush your teeth and comb your hair? 5 minutes from 9:05 to 9:10.  Clean the bathroom? 20 minutes from 9:10 a.m. until 9:30 am. On and on it went, your whole day scheduled to the minute, including coffee and bathroom breaks!  She’d have me flinging things in garbage bags, running room to room with a laundry basket under my arm grabbing the kids toys and making certain I was “dressed to my shoes”. The end result was a clean, clutter-free house, a less-stressed mom and a person who hated tasks-but LOVED organization- finally at peace.  Not bad, FlyLady, not bad at all.

Fast forward about 10 years and I discovered the Bullet Journal.  It’s still a thing: check out Pinterest and Instagram and you’ll find more ways to set up and decorate a bullet journal than you could ever imagine.  I started out all fancy-schmancy with it but soon realized that I didn’t have the time for that (ain’t nobody got time for that!!!) so I stripped it down to what I NEEDED: more organization.  It’s an ingenious system utilizing notebooks that you self-index. This results in the capability to not only track your tasks, jot down random notes and important information but also to FIND where you put it all.  Brilliant I tell you!  Brilliant!

The point is, in NOT being a task-based personality type, I needed to LEARN to become more efficient in my quest and those were two of the methods I employed, tweaked, made mine and utilize to this day.  The Fly-Lady and the Bullet Journal.  Thank heaven for the industrious creativity of Task-types who share their knowledge!

As I sit here about to wrap up this first entry, I’m laughing at the fact that,  rather than writing something hugely profound, motivating, and life-enhancing for you all, I instead found myself conjuring up a woman who had herself immortalized as a cartoon and easily convinced me that if nothing else in my home was clean, at least my kitchen sink was shiny!  Go figure.

Until next time, Peace, Joy and Success to you all!
