Get Out of Your Mind!

We have all been there- our mind swimming with the challenges everyday life and stressors toss at us. Often referred to as “the paralysis of analysis”, we become, literally and figuratively, stuck.

There was a time in my life-not that long ago- when I found myself at an impasse: it was time to make a career shift. I have been blessed with not only amazing educational experiences, but real-life, in the trenches first hand knowledge, as well. The fact being, I know a lot about, well, a LOT. A friend and colleague mentioned “You do life good”. It made me stop and think. Yes, I kind of do, but I believe it is ONLY because I’ve taken the time over 50 years to appreciate my experiences, been open to change, learning and growth. I’ve also made it a point to surround myself with people who add value to my existence (and hopefully I do the same for them!).

So at my impasse, I had a decision to make: where and on what do I want to focus my energy? The key word here is FOCUS. My mind was clogged with information and things I needed to share and I found myself flopping like a beached fish. I lacked direction and I was frustrated.

Small business owners such as dentists are challenged daily with issues large and small. Patient care, mostly, is the EASY part. Juggling staff, the intricacies and difficulties of remaining fiscally solvent and successful, learning and implementing new techniques coupled with also having a personal life can wear us down.

So what do we need to do? Clean out the clutter! Strip things down in your mind, parcel and package them into realistic boxes. There is little wrong in wanting to do many things, but if we don’t compartmentalize them into manageable segments, we will not be as successful in doing them well. Individuals who are “Task”-types ( in the PeopleMap™️ model of personalities) do this very well. They keep ticking off the boxes as they go and find a great sense of accomplishment in doing so.

But Task -types don’t make up the majority of business owners, and in order for those of us non-Task types to be successful, we need to learn HOW to overcome this weakness and turn it into a LEARNED strength.

For me, it was a matter of identifying all of the areas I was “expert” in, and then I honed it down further by choosing areas that I felt most passionate about and then the FINAL pass was in determining which of these could fill the needs of current and future clients and be of most benefit to them.

(Huge sigh of relief) I now had my “pillars”. Will I – and do I- still step outside my pillars as needs arise? Sure, that’s the People-type in me. But I stick- for the most part- to the tenets I’ve created and have found that in doing so, I have a clearer sense of direction and purpose.

So if all of the clutter in your mind is holding you back from achieving more, step back. Clean out the overload, focus and be proactive. If you need help- ASK for it! Delegate or hire out for the more mundane tasks where you can- the ones that are necessary but bring little happiness- and then FOCUS on the steps needed to make yourself more successful personally and professionally that bring you joy.

Until next time, Peace, Joy and Success to you all!
